Slatwall panels can be made in a wide variety of - cores, surface treatments, panel sizes, groove spacings, groove treatments, and edge / machining options. This page shows many of the different options available, and helps you better consider the available choices when specifying your Slatwall project.

1. Substrate or core materials

Anchor™ Core by Boise Cascade
Wind Mill Slatwall Products is an exclusive manufacturer of retail display panels using Anchor™ Core. Anchor Core is 50% stronger than MDF. Its growing popularity is based on its increased weight carrying capacity.

Medium Density Fiberboard (MDF)
Medium density fiberboard is an engineered wood product. It is made by breaking down hardwood or softwood residuals into wood fibers, combining it with wax and a resin binder to form panels. MDF is the mainstay core used for retail display panels. However, when more board strength is required, Anchor™ Core is recommended.

NAUF (No Added Urea Formaldehyde)
NAUF refers to the type of resin used as a bonding agent. It is part of a large family of chemical compounds called volatile organic compounds (VOC). This means the compounds vaporize becoming gas at normal room temperatures. Businesses supporting sustainable practices will often use NAUF products. NAUF is available in limited sizes and requires extended lead times.

Flame retardant (Class A) MDF
Core can be combined with fire rated plastic laminate by Formica™ or Wilsonart™. This will satisfy most local fire codes requiring a flame or fire retardant slatwall panel. Flame retardant (Class A) MDF is available in limited sizes and requires extended lead times. Always check local fire codes prior to purchasing flame retardant MDF.

3. Panel sizes

Common stock slatwall retail display panels are 48"H x 96"L. This panel size is the most cost efficient and is also the most available panel. However, when projects require a custom solution, Wind Mill excels at offering an impressive array of options, from creative designs, unique finishes, and manufacturing capabilities. Wind Mill produces retail display panels in a variety of other common sizes which can be machined with a half groove on the edges for stacking.

Wind Mill Slatwall products has one of the largest selections of Slatwall groove options in the U.S. Most of the larger retailers - Sears, TJ Maxx, and JC Penny's, typically specify an aluminum insert for holding strength, or to create a high-end look to their retail environment. Metal inserts can be painted in any color.

View our slatwall strength comparison chart for more information. There is a direct correlation between strength and cost. Why spend the money on heavier extrusions, such as the Wide-Sert™ or T-Sert™ when the panel is going to be used for medium or lighter weight applications. The Wind-Sert™ or a plastic insert will give the slatwall display or fixture a great look without adding a tremendous amount to the cost. Consider specifying Anchor™ Core for more strength. Some of our stock slatwall distributors carry slatwall panels machined for our Ready-Serts™. The Ready-Sert™ slatwall panel can be used with or without the Ready-Sert™ extrusion. The Ready-Sert™ extrusions are sold separately and are installed in the grooves before the panels are installed on the walls. You have the option of using the Ready-Sert™ inserts in only those grooves that require the extra holding power - thus saving costs. Some non-Slatwall hooks and accessories that do fit in the regular Slatwall, like pegboard hooks, may not fit into the Ready-sert™ extrusion. We can ship the Slatwall panels with the inserts installed in the panels, or per your instructions, we can ship them loose for you to install on the job site, or with any fixtures you might be manufacturing. For stacking purposes, one extra insert is shipped for every two panels ordered.

Slatwall Plastic Inserts

Plastic insert for Slatwall grooveOur plastic inserts can be installed in any normal Wind Mill Slatwall groove without special groove machining. All other Slatwall panels with aluminum inserts must be ordered from the factory because special machining is necessary. The plastic inserts for Slatwall grooves are basically decorative (no significant strength capacities), and they come in five basic colors:

Plastic Insert for Slatwall groove in whiteWhite Black Plastic insert for Slatwall groove Black Gray Plastic insert for Slatwall groove Gray Red Plastic Insert for Slatwall groove Red Almond Plastic Insert for Slatwall groove Almond

Slatwall Plastic Strips

Plastic Strips for Slatwall GroovesThe plastic strips come in the five colors shown above (red, white, almond, gray, and black), slatwall plastic strips fit the back of the groove as a decorative accent. These strips come in 130” rolls to cover one 3” on-center. Slatwall Plastic Strips are least expensive treatment for covering the grooves.

Slatwall Painted Grooves

Wind Mill uses water based paints, and can paint grooves to match, or accent a Slatwall panel.

7. Slatwall Edge Treatments

2 half grooves - puts a half groove on the edges
of the Slatwall panel for stacking purposes. The standard Slatwall panels come with half grooves on the top and bottom of the panels. This puts the seam between the panels at the back of the groove where they meet together.
1 half groove- puts a square edge on one side of the panel, and a half groove on the other for stacking purposes. 0 half grooves- leaves a square edge on the top and bottom edges of the panel.

8. Slatwall - Miscellaneous Other

Groove both sides of a Slatwall Panel Alternating grooves for a Slatwall Panel Splicing Woodgrain
1½" board - grooved 2 sides makes an excellent center panel for fixtures - displaying off both sides Offset Slatwall - ¾" Slatwall panels alternating grooves (typically 6" on center) Splicing Woodgrain laminate (HPL) is done to allow for the woodgrain to travel in the same direction as the grooves on a 48" W x 96" H (grooves in the short direction) panel. Woodgrain laminate always comes as a 4' x 8' sheet with the grain running in the long direction.
